Usage and history

Old Republic era[2]

"So you wouldn't recognize Revan if the two of you met?"
"Is there any reason I should? Beside the fact that I did not know Revan in life, Revan was known for wearing a full helmet and cape."
―Revan and Yuthura Ban, about the former's old identity as the Dark Lord[src]

During the early skirmishes of the Mandalorian Wars, this helmet belonged to a Mandalorian female. In 3,973 BBY, the helmet remained on the shores of the Outer Rim planet Cathar after the woman's death during the Mandalorian's attack on the world. Ten years later, the helmet was pivotal in the Jedi Knight Revan's efforts to find evidence of the Cathar species' genocide; Revan claimed the woman's helmet as his own, vowing not to remove it until the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders were defeated permanently. One year after Revan and his faction of Jedi successfully defended the Galactic Republic and vanquished the Mandalorians, Revan declared himself the new Dark Lord of the Sith and ignited the Jedi Civil War. Darth Revan wore the helmet up until his capture by the Jedi Order.

This helmet was originally worn as a part of a Mandalorian female's armor, and had a red and gray color. Ten years after her death[1] during the Mandalorians' genocide of the Cathar people on their homeworld in 3,973 BBY,[2] the helmet was claimed by the Jedi Knight Revan and was immediately donned by the Jedi.[1] Revan continued to wear the helmet as he led the Galactic Republic to victory against the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders.[4] After becoming a Sith Lord under the tutelage of a Sith Emperor[5] and eventually declaring himself the new Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Revan wore the helmet as part of his personal armor,[3] up until his capture by the Jedi Order and Republic forces in 3,957 BBY.[2]

"They were beaten! You didn't have to do it! One of you knew, but you didn't listen! I don't know your name—but I take up your cause. I will not remove your mask until there is justice—until the Mandalorians have been defeated once and for all. So swears…Revan!"
―Revan, after the vision of the Mandalorians slaughtering the Cathar[src]

During the early battles of the Mandalorian Wars, this helmet was worn by a Mandalorian female who was present during the Mandalorian's devastation of the Outer Rim world Cathar. After driving the Cathar people into the sea, the woman tried to convince Cassus Fett—who led the attack against the planet—not to kill the Cathar people, believing that they had been sufficiently defeated. However, Fett refused and ordered the Cathar to be killed; the woman died trying to defend the Cathar as they were slaughtered, and her helmet washed up on the shores of the planet.[1]

Ten years later, the Jedi Knight Revan, his friend and fellow Jedi Knight Malak, and their faction of Jedi were on Cathar searching for evidence of the Mandalorians' slaughter of the Cathar people. The Jedi Council member Vrook Lamar and a team of Council loyalists arrived on planet and confronted the Revanchists, ordering them to abandon their efforts. During the discussion, Revan noticed the helmet which had belonged the Mandalorian woman and picked it up. When some light shone on the helmet, all the Jedi present experienced a vision of the battle that had taken place ten years prior. After the vision's completion, Revan recognized that the Mandalorian female tried to defend the Cathar and donned her helmet, vowing not to remove it until he and his Jedi defeated the Mandalorians permanently.[1]

Revan continued to wear the helmet as he and Malak defeated the Mandalorians in the war's final battle at Malachor V in 3,960 BBY.[2] The two Jedi Knights fell to the dark side under the guidance of a Sith Emperor;[5] although Revan eventually declared himself Dark Lord of the Sith, with Malak becoming his Sith apprentice, establishing their own Sith Empire. Revan continued to wear the helmet during the Jedi Civil War, until Malak betrayed Revan during the Jedi Order and Republic forces attempt to capture both Sith Lords in 3,957 BBY.[6][7]

Behind the scenesEdit

Revan's helmet first appeared in the 2003 Xbox and PC video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, developed by BioWare.[3] The backstory of how Revan acquired the helmet was explained in the standalone comic Masks, which was the forty-second issue of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic comic series, written by John Jackson Miller.[1] The helmet was featured in a preview for BioWare's upcoming PC game Star Wars: The Old Republic that was released on the game's official website. In the video, the player-controlled character fights to shut down an ancient complex that was constructed by Darth Revan during his tenure as a Sith Lord. Near the end of the video, the scene cuts to what appears to be a tomb and Revan's helmet lying in front of it.[8] While both Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Masks portray the helmet as having been colored red and gray, various artwork depicts the helmet as having been only red.[9][10]

Revan's helmet was featured on Hasbro's action figure of Darth Revan in the third quarter of 2007. On the figure, the helmet appears as a facial mask,[11] as opposed to the full helmet which was depicted in the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic video game and Masks. The helmet was also featured on Revan's miniature figure in The Force Unleashed set of Star Wars Miniatures, released on November 16, 2007.[12] In 2009, the helmet was a part of Mighty Muggs' figure of Darth Revan.[13] A minature bust of Darth Revan, which features the helmet, is set to be released on January 2011 by Gentle Giant Studios.[14]
